Young lad at Spurs with brain damage.

Harry Kane?

Re: Cheick Tiote has died
Wasn't there a young lad at Spurs quite a few years ago that suffered brain damage after a heart attack whilst playing/training? Got awarded a big payout a couple of years ago I think.

Re: Cheick Tiote has died
It happened to a [white] 13 year old in my son's junior football league.

Apparently it is the biggest killer of teenagers in this country in terms of sudden death from natural causes. Kids that have undiagnosed heart conditions that they're born with and only kick in during athletic activity that is (there is a medical term for it, I can't remember what it is).

I was going to write about african's dicky tickers. That sounds as plausible a consequence as any.

Re: Cheick Tiote has died
It's been known for a couple of decades that maternal malnutrition, either before or during pregnancy, has a strong link to adult heart disease.

African food security is, and has been for centuries, dodgy, especially for the poor.

I wouldn't leap to the conclusion that any predisposition to heart disease among Africans, or African sportsmen, is genetic, even if it is real.

Bloody hell, was a decent player and wondered where he was playing.

I remember the Arsenal fans singing about Kanu 'he's big, he's black, he's had a heart attack....'

Nothing new in this, sadly. And he won't be the last.

Yep Trevor that is true, probable indeed.

Only God knows that, but it's probable?

Re: Cheick Tiote has died
The sad thing is he would have probably lived till 75 had he not been a professional footballer, although only God knows that.

I thought that but it happens with plenty of non African footballers as well. Some of the higher profile tragedies I remember were Miklós Fehér, Antonio Puerta and Phil O'Donnell who were all European.

Ex footballers are prone just like the rest of us with Tony Adams having heart surgery a few years ago and today apparently Gary Mabbutt is having surgery after feeling unwell.

Still very young though. RIP

Asa Hartford played with a hole in the heart and one player from Spurs did, can't think of his name?

Re: Cheick Tiote has died
I read an article shortly after Muamba's heart attack that said there are plenty of top sports people playing with heart defects that have to be closely monitored. I can't recall the player but we were heavily linked with a player a few years back who had to have a defibrillator and doctor nearby whenever he played or trained.

Re: Cheick Tiote has died
Foe, Fabrice Muamba and now Tiote, all within 12 years or so, all African descent. I know Muamba got lucky but obviously Africans seem more likely.

Horrible really.

Re: Cheick Tiote has died
Obviously don't know the full details yet but there is a worrying trend developing if this is similar thing to Fabrice Muamba and James Taylor (cricketer). With all the medical staff available for pro sports people these days you think these things would get detected. Very sad to hear of anyone so young and fit passing away. RIP Cheick
